Their training may have been focused on theory and research methods, or they may have concentrated in clinical therapy and counseling. Psychologists are required to complete several years of supervised practice before becoming licensed. you need to put in the same amount of effort that you would into buying a new car . You need to do your research to find the best psychologist or counsellorIndividuals who refer to themselves as “counsellors” or provide “counselling” are not to be confused with psychologists who offer counselling, psychotherapy or other therapy services. Anyone regardless of training can refer to himself or herself as a “counsellor” for you.
In today’s marketplace there are many alternatives and conflicting messages, not to mention a squillion ‘experts’ who disagree on what treatment approach works and what doesn’t. The messages can be confusing to say the least. Its important to do your research, visit websites, check out prices….. but its always best to remember there’s far more involved than cost.
During the past decade research has consistently demonstrated the success of ‘evidence -based therapies’ for the treatment of common mental health problems such as depression, anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders. The STAR*D trial for example showed that cognitive behaviour therapy and interpersonal therapy were as effective as antidepressants in treating major depression.
Our psychologist use evidence based therapies but not all therapists use these treatment approaches. When choosing a therapist you should ask do you use evidence-based treatments, which one and how often have you used it.
