Men have a biological clock too

A broad study of couples seeking fertility help has shown that men are not immune from the ticking of the biological clock: They become less fertile after the age of 35. Researchers at a French fertility clinic studied over 12,000 couples who sought treatment at the clinic, and found that older men were less likely to conceive a child with their partners, and were more likely to conceive a child that ultimately miscarried

Coping with ‘chemo brain’

A patient is positioned to receive an fMRI, which will test brain function while the person performs a mental task.Loss of concentration, difficulty remembering, difficulty thinking clearly — all are signs of a phenomenon cancer patients call “chemo brain.” Now researchers are looking at the cognitive changes that occur in the brain during chemotherapy to determine what causes chemo brain and how patients can compensate for these challenges.

A single antidepressant tablet makes a depressed person see the world in a more positive light just four hours after swallowing it, a new study has shown.

Dr Philip Cowen, professor of pharmacology at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford, told delegates at the Royal College of Psychiatrists Annual Meeting in London that antidepressant medication starts to work far faster than most clinicians assume. [continue reading…]
