Skunk ‘psychosis risk’ warning

People who smoke the strongest form of cannabis – known as skunk – may be more at risk of psychosis than those who use milder forms, UK researchers claim.

In a study of 300 people, those who had suffered an episode of psychosis were 18 times more likely to have smoked skunk than other cannabis users.

A Royal College of Psychiatrists meeting heard they were also more likely to use cannabis every day.

Saturday can be the worst enemy for our waistlines, according to researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

They found that study subjects on strict diet and exercise programs tend to lose weight more slowly than expected because they eat more on weekends than during the week. The investigators report their findings in the advance online publication of the journal Obesity. [continue reading…]

Dr. Douglas Anderson was among the earliest neurosurgeons in the nation to treat Parkinson’s disease with a treatment called deep brain stimulation.

Dr. Anderson has treated approximately 50 Parkinson’s patients with the therapy, known as DBS.

His first patient was a middle-aged woman who used a wheelchair due to her Parkinson’s. Dr. Anderson implanted an electrode that delivered mild electrical signals deep in her brain. This stimulation reorganized her brain’s electrical impulses. The treatment worked so well the patient was able to walk down the aisle as a bridesmaid at her friend’s wedding. [continue reading…]

Intuition can be explained

Intuition, or tacit knowledge, is difficult to measure, so it is often denigrated. A new dissertation in education research from Linköping University in Sweden shows that there is a neurobiological explanation for how experience-based knowledge is created.

“Can’t ‘splain sump’n to somebody who doesn’t understand it”; “my legs think faster than I do” (Swedish alpine skiing champion Ingemar Stenmark). “Skate where the puck´s going, not where it´s been” (Wayne Gretsky).
