I had a dream 2 nights ago, not an unremarkable feat you might comment. On awakening I was struck by the vivid memory of the dream, I was purchasing fabric ( to make a prom dress), but I digress…. the colours of the fabric , the detail and especially the scarlet red shoes that I chose to complete my “look” are what stuck with me on waking! So, in light of the fact that I was a child who grew up with black & white TV , the following feature in New Scientist  particularly caught my eye.

Going to university, then choosing a mentally demanding job may help protect the brain from the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s disease on memory.
Scientists found tissue damage was much quicker to lead to memory loss in the less intellectually stimulated.
They suggest mentally tough work, or genes which help people achieve such careers, may help the brain compensate for disease.

US scientists have found that complete or partial removal of an enzyme that regulates fatty acid levels improves cognitive deficits in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new paper in Nature Neuroscience.The researchers from the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease have identified specific fatty acids that may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease as well as a novel therapeutic strategy.
