A new University of Iowa study offers some good news for caregivers and loved ones of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Patients might forget a joke or a meaningful conversation — but even so, the warm feelings associated with the experience can stick around and boost their mood.

For the study, published this week in the Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers showed individuals with memory loss clips of happy and sad movies. Thirty years ago today, a young man from Port Coquitlam dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean before beginning a cross-country marathon.

When I first arrived in Canada some 22 years ago from the UK, I had little or no idea who Terry Fox was. But I have come to appreciate that Terry Fox’s legacy is truly phenomenal. On a personal note my sons attended Terry Fox secondary school in Port Coquitlam . I am so  humbled by the inspiration that this brave young man has instilled in our community, across Canada and around the World.

Following the suicide of a relative or close friend, surviving family members and friends are left with a number of painful questions: “What made them do it?,” “Why didn’t they get help?” The most troublesome question is often, “Is there anything I could have done to prevent this?” People who are contemplating suicide tend to conceal their behavior, or deny they are having suicidal thoughts, so it can be difficult to identify warning signs.
